Narrow-band red light phototherapy in perennial allergic rhinitis and nasal polyposis
Double-blind randomised controlled trial. 50 allergic rhinitis patients + 10 nasal polyposis. Treatment: 660 nm red light for 4.4 minutes, 3 times daily over 14 days (6 joules/day). Assessment by symptom score and video nasendoscopy before/after.
660 nm red light produces a clear attenuation of clinical symptoms in patients with uncomplicated allergic rhinitis. The improvement is statistically significant compared to placebo on both criteria (symptoms and endoscopy).
Narrow-band 660 nm rhinophototherapy constitutes an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis. The authors recommend prior endoscopic screening to identify suitable candidates.
